How to Choose an LED Wall for Your Event: Size, Pixel Pitch, Indoor vs Outdoor

An LED wall is usually the most visible thing at an event literally. It’s also the piece of equipment people order with the least information: “a big screen” can mean twenty very different things. This guide explains the four decisions that actually determine whether your screen looks spectacular or unreadable: size, pixel pitch, indoor versus outdoor panels, and how it will be rigged and fed content.

 

1. Size: start from the furthest viewer, not the stage

The most common mistake is choosing screen size by how it looks next to the stage instead of how it reads from the back of the audience. A useful rule of thumb: the furthest viewer should be no more than roughly 8–10 times the screen height away. If the last row of a conference sits 25 meters from the stage, a screen under about 2.5–3 meters tall will leave them squinting at the slides.

Content matters too. Video and camera close-ups survive distance much better than slides full of text. If your program includes presentations, size up small text is always the first casualty.

Rule of thumb: screen height ≥ distance to the furthest viewer ÷ 10. For text-heavy content, go larger.

 

2. Pixel pitch: how close will people stand?

Pixel pitch is the distance, in millimeters, between the centers of neighboring LEDs you’ll see it written as P2.6, P3.9, P5 and so on. The smaller the number, the denser the pixels and the sharper the image up close. The trade-off is that finer-pitch panels are heavier per square meter of brightness budget and are unnecessary when nobody stands near the screen.

The practical rule: the minimum comfortable viewing distance in meters roughly equals the pitch number. A P3 panel looks clean from about 3 meters; a P5 from about 5. So:

  • Fine pitch (roughly P2–P3) conference stages, TV/streaming backdrops, showrooms: anywhere people or cameras get close.
  • Medium pitch (roughly P3–P5) most event main screens, wedding backdrops, club installations.
  • Coarser pitch (P5 and up) large outdoor screens viewed from a distance, where sheer size and brightness matter more than close-up detail.

 

3. Indoor vs outdoor: brightness and weather

Indoor and outdoor LED panels are different products, not the same panel with a cover. Two things separate them:

  • Brightness. Indoor screens are made for controlled light and are typically bright enough at under ~1,500 nits. Direct daylight swallows that completely outdoor panels run several times brighter so the image stays readable in the sun.
  • Weather protection. Outdoor panels are sealed against rain and dust and built to be rigged in wind. Indoor panels are lighter and finer-pitched, but they belong indoors.

The corner case to plan for is the semi-outdoor event: a daytime garden wedding, an open courtyard conference. Even under a tent, ambient daylight is intense that’s usually outdoor-panel territory, and it’s worth telling your rental partner exactly where the screen will stand and when the sun hits it.

4. Rigging and content: the part everyone forgets

An LED wall is built on site from cabinets, and those cabinets have to stand on something. There are two standard approaches:

  • Ground support the wall is stacked on a base structure behind the stage. Simple and fast, needs floor space and a level surface.
  • Flown the wall hangs from truss, either on lifting towers or from the venue’s rigging points. Cleaner sightlines, but it needs load calculations and proper rigging this is not a DIY step.

Then the screen needs to be fed. Between your laptop and the wall sits an LED processor that scales and maps the signal to the panels. Practical questions to settle before the event day: What are the sources slides, video files, a live camera? Who switches between them? Does the screen’s shape match the content? (A cinematic 16:9 video on a tall narrow backdrop wall will letterbox badly.) A good operator handles all of this which is why we include one on our productions.
